You Sexy Thing by Cat Rambo is a cross between Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers books with Ann Leckie’s Radch series with a side of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. And I got a touch of Andre Norton with the talk of Free Traders and Forerunners.

A former military crew has left the Hive Mind to open The Last Chance restaurant on a space station, led by former 10-hour Admiral Niko Larsen. It’s a motley crew of humans and aliens with a deep loyalty and love for each other. When the space station is attacked, they end up on a bioship, You Sexy Thing. Pirates, vengeance, ghosts, political maneuvering, torture, redemption – you get a delicious tasting menu of everything.

My thoughts about You Sexy Thing

I’ve read several reviews that describe this book as lighthearted and humorous. There are moments of that but there’s also kidnapping, torture, and murder so don’t pick this up expecting a carefree romp across the galaxy.

What you do get is a cast of characters who care deeply for each other and band together when things are difficult. Intriguing world-building where science, mysticism, and magic coexist along with a myriad of political systems in Known Space. Plus lots of cookies.

In conclusion

I hope Cat Rambo plans to write more books with these characters because I’m smitten by them and want to know more.
