About First Comes Like
First Comes Like is the third book in Alisha Rai’s Modern Love series. It focuses on Beauty expert and influencer Jia Ahmed. If you’ve read the Forbidden Hearts trilogy by Alisha, Jia is Sadia’s younger sister.
Jia’s moved away from her family to California. She’s ready to take her career to the next step. But lately, she hasn’t felt the same enthusiasm.
A bright spot has been the texts she’s shared with Bollywood royalty/superstar Dev Dixit. When she learns that he’s coming to the states to work on a new project, she couldn’t be more excited.
Using her contacts, she gets an invite to an event he’s attending. Fantastic! Except he clearly has no idea who she is.
Mortifies, Jia realizes she’s been catfished. Bad enough for anyone but absolutely mortifying for an influencer. She’s broken-hearted on top of being embarrassed.
Then Events Happen and Jia and Dev find themselves in a full-blown faux-mance.
My thoughts about First Comes Like
The first two books in the series were awesome reads so I had high hopes for Jia’s story. When first introduced, I loved that in a family of doctors, Jia is crushing it as a social media influencer.
This is a sweeter, softer, less steamy story than the first two books in the series. But the book has the same strong women helping each other vibe. Jia has her friends and her sisters, who even when they don’t like her choices, still have her back.
I appreciated that mentions were made about Jia and one of her sisters being seriously ill – a nod to Covid and how it affects lives long-term.
I loved that a Muslim woman who wears a hijab was a mega-successful social media beauty/lifestyle influencer.
The story moved quickly – so quickly that I was sure my ARC was missing chapters. I wanted more!
Read the first two books in the Modern Love series by Alisha Rai. They’re a little bit steamier but they’re both fun, banter-filled stories about successful women trying to figure out their love lives. Start with The Right Swipe, then read Girl Gone Viral. Read my full review of Girl Gone Viral.
For another look at a slow-moving but sweet diverse romance, try How to Catch a Queen by Alyssa Cole. Read my full review.
While not my favorite of the series, I still really enjoyed First Comes Like and would definitely recommend it. If you’re looking for a cozy, fast-paced, quick read, low steam, sweet, diverse romance – definitely choose First Comes Like.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the ARC.
