I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I’ve been a fan of the Anita Blake books since the very beginning. I loved that someone was writing a badass woman who was ready to go toe to toe with the big bad monsters. There was a paranormal romance with a love triangle between Anita, Jean-Claude the vampire, and Richard the werewolf. Lots of mystery and some serious throwdowns. And then we got to book 9 and the series shifted.

What was lots of action with some personal drama flipped and now the books were about relationships and sex. So much sex. In every permutation.

About Smolder

Smolder starts in a whirlwind. Edward and his stepson, Peter, are in town so Edward can be fitted for his custom-designed Man of honor clothes for Anita’s wedding to Jean-Claude. Then Anita gets called about what appears to be a murder of a vampire. Still, the same day and it’s off to get ready for date night with Jean-Claude at Guilty Pleasures. Where an ancient big bad tries to take over Jean-Claude and all of his metaphysical connections. When Jean-Claude mentally calls for werewolves, who should show up but Richard – long absent. Not only does he show up but he’s had an attitude change and he’s ready to come back into the fold.

My thoughts about Smolder

Smolder is emotional drama and negotiations. And sex. Lots of sex. Descriptions of gorgeous people with amazing hair and eyes, dressed sumptuously. And so much turmoil and introspection and raw feelings. This felt like a big Wedding Eve book like the stage is being set for Very Big Things to happen in Book #30. Lots of loose ends and cliffhangers.

So if you read the Anita Blake books for the intense spice of all flavors and the descriptions of hotties of all shapes and sizes, enjoy this book in all its sensual glory. But if you’re a fan of the mysteries and the battles, maybe wait for the next book.
