Writing
The things that I loved about the Charley books – witty conversations, love for coffee, and quirky people with deep, heartfelt connections to each other – are all present in this new series. Writing sarcastic, snarky main characters without turning that into the entirety of their personality isn’t easy and Darynda Jones did a fantastic job with Charley and is off to a great start with Sunny.
Review
Sunshine Vicram returns to her hometown, teenage daughter Auri in tow, as the newly elected sheriff. A job that her parents skillfully manipulated her into taking.
With no chance to gently ease into her new role, Sunshine has to hit the ground running on her first day as one of Auri’s classmates has been abducted. Someone drives a car through the front of the polices tation and there’s a rooster-napping to solve. And also worry what the Muffins of Doom are warning her about.
As Sunny investigates the missing girl, it brings up memories and questions about her own kidnapping when she was a teenager. Is this case related to her own abduction? Is this investigation going to trigger the trauma of that one all over again for Sunny?
Now that Sunny’s back in her hometown, what’s going to happen with her childhood crush, Levi? Especially since she still has a serious lust for the still hot and possibly still a bad boy? For fans of the Charley books, Levi definitely smolders with Reyes vibes.
My thoughts
The mystery was well-plotted and engaging with several hints of things to be revealed in upcoming books. I couldn’t put this down – finished it in a day and cannot wait for the next book!
